Finally! We are seeing some amazing weather! I’m so excited. With warmer weddings – and being well into your 20s – means one thing: wedding season is here. Of course, it’s not just weddings, it’s a wide variety of formal events that leave your closet full of one time wears and a bank account that’s not as full as your closet haha.
A few years ago I was introduced to Rent the Runway from my bestie and my formal game has never been the same. I rent for a variety of reasons, but mostly to save money and not feel guilty when I look at dresses in my closet that I’ve only worn once. Listen, I get it, if you wear something and take 50-1,000,000 pictures in it, you don’t want to wear it again for quite some time. No judgements here. But that’s what makes renting so great, you don’t have to worry about it because you send it back anyway.
I tell everyone I know to rent and have turned quite a few of my friends on to this endeavor. So here’s the breakdown:
Browse the site
I like to narrow it down to my exact size dress and date that I’m renting so I’m seeing only what’s available to me. The worst is when you see a dress that you fall in love with only to find out that it’s not available. Definitely apply some filters to avoid this at all costs!
Read the reviews
Reviews are the absolute best thing about this site. Pretty much every girl that uses this site uploads photos of themselves in the dress (so you can get an idea of what the dress looks like on real girls) and includes their weight, height and dress size that they wore. They’ll go on to say if the dress ran big or small and what they liked/didn’t like about it. Sometimes I’ll find a dress that I love and read reviews and know okay, this might not work for my body – and the same has worked vice versa. Sometimes after reading reviews I’ve ended up renting something that I didn’t love from seeing it on the model.
The biggest question that I get about renting is – “how do you know what size to get?” or “what if it doesn’t work?” You can get a second size in the dress for absolutely free so it helps to take a lot of the guess work out of renting. Reviews will definitely help this, based on reviews you can see what girls say about sizing up or sizing down so it’ll help with deciding what your second size to be. As an added bonus, you can also rent a completely separate dress for $32.50 as well so you have a lot of options available to you..
I definitely recommend having your rental arrive 2 business days before your event date. Here’s why… their customer service is amazing. Recently, my friend rented a dress and just didn’t love it when it arrived. She called RTR for help and they overnighted her a new option and she sent the original back in the meantime. I’ve heard a ton of stories like this. It’s amazing. They send you a free return envelope so once your 4 day rental is over, you just bring it to a UPS drop off and you’re good to go!

I rent so often and for a variety of events. Most recently, I wore a rental for my sister’s bridal shower. I wore a beautiful, expensive dress ($325) that I rented for $50. I could never have afforded the original. I felt comfortable in my dress (the most important thing) and got a ton of compliments. Wearing a unique dress is always fun!
I am a VIP member, I think it’s $80 but this does get you free shipping and free insurance so I feel it’s worth it as these things add up! Let me know if you decide to rent – I’d love to see pictures!
